The Canadian Trucking Alliance is condemning protests on public roads over Ottawa’s vaccine mandate for truckers.
It comes as convoys of truckers start to make their way to the nation’s capital in protest of the requirements.
In a statement, the alliance said it believes protests on public roads “are not how disagreements with public policies should be expressed.”
“What is not acceptable is disrupting the motoring public on highways and commerce at the border,” said the federation of provincial trucking associations.
“Members of the trucking industry who want to publicly express displeasure over government policies can choose to hold an organized, lawful event on Parliament Hill or contact their local MP.”
Truckers are planning to do just that, with a rally scheduled for Saturday in Ottawa.
The alliance noted that the “vast majority” of Canadian truck drivers are vaccinated, with the overall industry vaccination rate closely mirroring that of the general public.
President Stephen Laskowski said the trucking industry must “adapt and comply” with the vaccine mandate.
Canadian truck drivers crossing the border from the United States must now be vaccinated against COVID-19 to avoid quarantine, while all unvaccinated foreign drivers will be turned away.
All non-Americans looking to enter the U.S. at a land border, including truck drivers, must show proof of full vaccination.
