Kenora Fire 51 is now being held after three months of burning out of control.
The blaze forced a voluntary evacuation of Wabaseemoong First Nation earlier this month as it burned 20 kilometres north of the community.
It grew to over 200,000 hectares in size.
Jonathan Scott is an Information Officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and he provides a regional update.
“There were no new fires in the northwest region yesterday. With the wet weather, cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity, there will be a reduction in the potential for new fires.”
Scott says while this is promising, we still have to stay vigilant.
“Right now there’s still a few months left of the fire season. Officially ends October 31 but as it stands now the forest fire hazard is low across the northwest region.
Of the 79 active forest fires in the Northwest region, 13 are not under control.
