Final preparations are being made at area schools for the return of in-class learning Thursday.
Brendan Hyatt is the Director of Education for the Northwest Catholic District School Board and says staff are eagerly awaiting to see kids again.
Hyatt says students will still be grouped in cohorts and all public health measures must be followed.
But he stresses there will be some loosening of the rules.
Hyatt says students will be allowed to leave their grouping and not wear a mask when outside.
Physical distancing requirements remain in place outdoors.
Hyatt adds extra-curricular activities, sports and instrumental music will also return.
He hints the very popular ‘Turkey Trot’ race in Dryden may be able to make a return.
Hyatt says although some restrictions remain in place, it will be good to see students have more of an opportunity to interact with one another.
Hyatt notes during the break staff and administration focused on ensuring a smooth transition for everyone.
“We’ve got our mental health teams getting things together to support, not only the staff but our students as well, with some of their mental health and well-being needs. We recognize that this may be quite a change for students who have been away for so long to get back into a classroom after they have been at home at their table learning.”
Virtual learning will continue for students who feel more comfortable at home, but Hyatt believes most will return.
He notes all classrooms at all their schools are up to date with the proper and required ventilation.
