A chance for Red Lakers to relax and enjoy one of the last weekends of summer.
The Red Lake Summer Festival kicks off tonight (Friday August 6) at 6pm in Centennial Park.
While it won’t be quite like the traditional Norseman Festival, Organizer Duane Riddell says they still wanted to do something for the community.
“We’ve been through so much in the last two years, with an evacuation and COVID-19 and now in an evacuation alert scenario. So, the town’s pretty stressed. Although it’s challenging, we decided we would try a bit of the festival on a smaller scale. We’re predominantly a music festival this year.”
A vendor market will also be on with live music performances 7pm to 10pm, followed by an outdoor movie showing of ‘Planes’ at dusk.
“We had a lot of interest from vendors who’ve been sorta locked up through COVID, so they too want to participate. Everything for that is taking place in the Red Lake Community Centre Event Pavilion, which we’ve never used before for any of our festival activities so we’re excited to try that out,” said Riddell.
Riddell goes over the Saturday (August 7) highlights, with nearly 10 hours of entertainment.
“We have Al Simmons, Leaf Rapids, William Prince, Sweet Alibi, Go For A Szozda and Whole Lot Of Angus. Whole Lot Of Angus, they’re an AC/DC tribute band and we’ve been trying to get them up here for a couple years, we had to cancel them because of COVID last year so we’re excited for them to end the show Saturday night.”
The vendor market is on 12pm-10pm Saturday, followed by an outdoor movie showing of ‘Raya and The Last Dragon’ at the Ear Falls Waterfront Park and the movie will also be shown Sunday (August 8) at Red Lake’s Centennial Park.
The festival has received some provincial help to off-set some of the costs to the tune of $23,448.
COVID-19 protocols will be in place and the festival is free to attend thanks area sponsors.
