Stage one of evacuating the Wabaseemoong First Nation is taking place today.
That includes the most vulnerable residents of the community.
Wabaseemoong is starting the evacuation process because of Kenora Fire #51, which is
12 kilometers from the community.
An action plan is in place with the help of the federal government and the Ministry of Natural Resources
and Forestry, the Kenora District Services Board, WNHAC, and the Kenora Chiefs Advisory.
In the meantime, spaces have been found in Dryden, Kenora, Manitoba and other spots in Ontario should a full-scale
evacuation be needed.
Chief Waylon Scott says the situation is changing quickly and they want to find places for residents to stay that are as
close to home as possible.
