Forest fire activity hasn’t eased up much in the already hard hit Red Lake District.
In their update this afternoon, Municipal Officials say Red lake Fire 77, 16 and Kenora 51 continue to be active and a relative concern to area communities.
Once again an evacuation is not an immediate concern but officials stress that residents stay prepared.
To date, a total of 391,087 hectares have burnt in the Red Lake District.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says Fire 77, for over a week now, remains about 33 kilometres west of Red Lake but has been active on the south east side with some new burning and hot spots located.
Fire 16 is still active about 25 kilometres west of Pikangikum-Nungesser Lake and has added some growth on the northern side, while Kenora 51 continues to be a challenge on the south eastern portion with new hot spots located.
Smoke and poor visibility is expected to continue to be an issue in the coming days.

Red Lake Forest Fire Update from Mayor Fred Mota – August 3, 2021
Forest Fires RED 077, RED 016 and KEN 051 continue to remain active and a relative concern to our community.
RED 077 has been active on the south east side of this fire, with some new burning and hot spots located.
The MNRF has continued to protect our community and advises how ground crews will focus on this side of the fire with continued air support.
RED 016 had growth to the northern side and will continue to be active for some time.
KEN 051 grew in size to the south and has posed some challenges on the south eastern portion of this fire, with new hot spots located.
I have been reassured how the MNRF continues to secure new crews and air support to fight these fires in the Red Lake District.
Smoke and poor visibility will continue to be an issue in the coming days.
While an evacuation is not an immediate concern, we must remain prepared, as fire activity and weather is always changing.
To date 391,087 hectares have burnt in the Red Lake District.
I am once again thankful for the MNRF along with our Municipal Volunteer Fire Fighters and their efforts made to date.
The Municipality will provide an update on Friday, August 6th at 3:00 pm.
However, should a communication be warranted prior that date, we will do so immediately.
Stay safe.
Mayor Fred Mota
