The new Superior International Junior Hockey League team in Sioux Lookout will be known as the ‘Bombers.’
The ownership group has officially unveiled the name, logo and vision to the public.
Matt Cairns is the Director of Marketing and Communications and says they selected the name Bombers to honour the hardworking Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fire crews who spend every day to help keep us safe from wildfires.
Cairns adds it also recognizes the important role the Ministry plays in the Sioux Lookout area and all of Northwestern Ontario.
The team colours will be green and yellow in honour of the old Queen Elizabeth Warriors High School program and the footprint they left in building the sport in what has become a hockey crazed community.
Sioux Lookout last had a junior hockey team from 2008-2012 but that club folded due to numerous reasons.
Cairns stresses things are different this time around as they have a whole new group that is local and dedicated to seeing the program be successful.
The group also consists of Austen Hoey, Joe Cassidy and Christine Hoey.
Cairns stresses having junior hockey back is a long time coming and everyone is excited to get started.
He notes the next step is catching their breath for a couple of days and then beginning their fundraising and marketing campaign in preparation for the 2022 season.
Austin Hoey is the Director of Operations and says they explored the potential of an SIJHL team several months ago with a goal to build a team with the support of our community, businsses and First Nation partners.
He also thanked SIJHL Commissioner Darren Nicholas, the league Board of Governors, and Dryden GM Ice Dogs President Mike Sveinson for their guidance and support throughout the application period.
