Prepare for a summer of fun and learning.
Science North is back with its in-person camps in Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Kenora and Thunder Bay.
The camps provide interactive learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. (STEM)
Staff Scientist Sean Murray says they are offering a number of programs this year.
“We have an Earth Camp which is all about going underground and learning about rocks and minerals. We also have a Discovery Camp which is a camp that kind of covers all aspects of science.”
Murray expands on the Discovery program by stating, “We have a Space Day where we will talk a little bit about the Mars Rover Mission that happened this year. We have some nature camp stuff in there as well as some general chemistry.”
He notes, “We also have a Girls Engineering Camp happening this summer. So this is a project we’ve been really passionate about and working with a couple of different organizations to really promote and encourage girls and women in STEM.”
The camps are for kids aged 6 to 11 and will run for two weeks: July 26-30 and August 9-13.
Murray says he understands there may still be some COVID hesitancy, so they are back with their Summer Science at Home online program.
“We’re going to have some of our scientists online and have all sorts of household materials that you can use. That you can find in your home, you can find in your kitchen and go through some really great and amazing science that may might involve your backyard or some really basic stuff you may have at home.”
The program will be available from July 5 through August 20 for children ages 7 to 11 and be delivered in English and French.
The live sessions will run from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 11 am each day.
Murray stresses, “Science North is a fun way to get kids engaged in science. It’s not school. It’s meant to be fun, engaging, exciting. We bring lots of cool different experiments and supplies up that you may not have a chance to explore with on your own.”
Registrations are now being accepted.
