Weekly Update From Kenora MP Eric Melillo:
I was in Ottawa last week, where I advocated for tourism operators, small business owners, frontline workers, and vulnerable communities in the Kenora riding, in addition to standing up for the rights of law-abiding firearm owners.
During Question Period on Tuesday, I asked the government whether fully vaccinated foreign nationals will be allowed to enter Canada – a question that has been top of mind for tourism operators across the country. Tourist camps in the Kenora riding lost a full season last year, and many spent money on unnecessary overhead costs because the government wasn’t forthcoming about how long the border closure would last. These businesses need clarity now so they can plan for the coming months.
On Wednesday, I gave a speech in the House thanking the frontline workers in northwestern Ontario who have stepped up to keep us safe. Unfortunately, the federal government has largely failed to provide the PPE, rapid tests, vaccines, and information needed to protect these workers. I am urging the government to do more to secure vaccines for all Canadians and overcome COVID-19 once and for all.
I also released a statement condemning the Liberal government’s overreaching new firearms policy. Time and time again, the Liberals have voted against tougher sentences for violent criminals while criminalizing responsible hunters and sport shooters. The Conservative Party will continue to advance common-sense policies to reduce crime, while defending the rights of law-abiding firearm owners.
On Tuesday and Thursday, the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Committee discussed our report on support for Indigenous communities during COVID-19 and continued our study on food security in northern communities.
On Friday, I delivered a statement thanking volunteers in the Kenora riding who have been sheltering the homeless population during this period of extreme cold. I’m proud to represent the people of the Kenora riding, who consistently step up to support one another and help those in need.
