It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our mom, Doreen Mae McKay at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre on February 13, 2021.
Doreen, a New Year’s baby, was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on January 1, 1931 to Everett and Mary Jane Dickson and was one of six children. She ventured out at a young age landing in Dryden where she met a handsome young man named Ken while serving him ice cream one day and in 1952 they married. They welcomed their son Doug in 1958 and in 1963 they completed their family with Allan. Doreen became famous in 1968 when, along with her teammates, won the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts and proudly represented Ontario at the Nationals. In 1977 Ken and Doreen bought the Evening Star Motel where they met many amazing people. She was always on the go! She enjoyed visiting friends, watching local baseball, hosting little tea parties with her friends and watching curling on TV. Most of all she really loved her family. As soon as she heard we were coming for a visit she got busy baking. She would always make everyone’s favourite and there was always a tin of butter tarts to take home.
Doreen is survived by sons Doug (Carol) and Allan; and her two grandchildren Scott and Jodi who she adored.
She was predeceased by her husband Ken, parents Everett and Mary Jane, brothers Bobby, Dick, and Duncan, sisters Jean and Franny, and granddaughter Sara.
There are so many people who helped mom over the last many years who we will always be grateful for. Special thanks to Linda for supporting mom always and especially for being there when mom needed it most. Thank you to the incredible staff at TBRHSC for their care and compassion.
Due to Covid restrictions, a service will be planned at a later date.
