A new campaign has been launched in awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
The Red Ribbon initiative is a Treaty #3 movement for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people who stand against violence towards aboriginal women and girls.
The Red Ribbon represents Zahgidiwin or “Love”, in honour of the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
Wearing the red ribbon signifies a commitment to honour, respect, protect and love Indigenous women and girls and to come together in ending violence against Indigenous Women and Girls.
Treaty #3 Chief Francis Kavanaugh says “It is initiatives such as the Red Ribbon campaign that keeps the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls at the forefront of discussions in our Nation. I applaud the leadership of the Women’s Council and lift them up in their efforts to have these difficult conversations and raise awareness of MMIWG.”
Grand Council Treaty #3 says Indigenous women make up 4% of Canada’s population yet account for 10% of all missing or murdered women.
