Canada’s forest sector is welcoming a federal pledge to plant 2 billion trees.
Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O’Regan has unveiled his plan to launch the initiative in the new year.
The Forest Products Association of Canada says this thoughtful and inclusive approach will help Canada move to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The organization says the forest sector already plants roughly 600 million seedlings every year in order to renew Canada’s forests, build resiliency, and keep our forests as forests forever.
FPAC President and CEO Derek Nighbor says he sees opportunities to plant these trees in both urban centres, and across northern Canada that have been hit hard in recent years by pests and fire.
Nighbor adds his group will work closely with the government to meet the goal, noting it will provide significant environmental, economic and social benefits.
