The City of Dryden has declared next April and May as ‘Honeybee Appreciation Months’.
Honey Beekeeper and Educator Reagan Breeze has been working for a year on a plan to bring education to the forefront on how important pollinators are to our existence.
Breeze joined the CKDR Morning Show Tuesday to talk about the significance of the proclamation.
“That’s allowing people to allow their dandelions to grow in the Spring time. People showing their support through the yard signs that we have.”
He stresses the decision will provide much needed support for the honeybee population.
“The dandelion is one of the most beautiful plants and weeds that actually comes out first, that gives that vital nectar and pollen for the bees after a long winter of just relaxing after the summer. So it’s a beautiful thing, I just can’t thank them enough.”
Breeze notes Sioux Lookout is also poised to make a similar declaration.
“We as municipalities, collectively in northwestern Ontario, can shine above every other province by having Honeybee Appreciation Months within our Northwest Hub and showing our support. Being leaders. Being progressive.”
Breeze notes his campaign has gone viral with his story spreading southern Ontario, Canada and even the United States.
He adds his ideas don’t cost any money and lessens the carbon footprint.
“It actually could save Municipalities money with not cutting certain corridors of grass. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that their going to have a hay field growing. It could be beautiful flowers and that’s the pitch that I got to work with.”
Breeze says he would like to work with Public Works throughout the Spring months to help the bee population thrive.
He is promising a big 2021 as Breeze is set to launch his Junior Beekeepers Course that is starting in Dryden and Kenora as well as the ‘Rooftop Beekeeping’ initiative.
He notes 100% of the honey that is created on top of the business rooftop with the bees will be donated right back to the participating business.
