Back on January 12th at 6:37am, local residents got a message warning of an incident at the nuclear power plant in Pickering.
Today (Thursday) a final report on the mistaken message was released.
Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says the report states human error was the cause of the cell-phone blast and steps are being taken to ensure such a message is not sent out in error again.
“We have already put in place a number of initiatives and changes including staff upgrades and training to ensure that this doesn’t happen again and if it ever happens again, everyone knows exactly what their roles and responsibilities are.”
Jones says they have moved forward on 13 of the recommendation to change the system and will continue to take action.
Pelmorex won the contract for the Public Alert System and Jones points out that’s Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission jurisdiction.
One issue of concern identified in the report was it took 108 minutes to issue a message saying the alert was sent in error.
Jones notes measures are being put in place to ensure more than 100 minutes don’t go by until a retraction is sent out.
After a false alert woke Ontarians last month, I immediately called for an investigation into what went wrong. The investigation is complete, and we're already taking action to strengthen Emergency Management. See my statement and read the full report: https://t.co/qELjkc7hIs
