A successful day of ingenuity at the Dryden Recreation Centre and Pool for the Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Race.
Last Friday, students from a number of area schools designed and built boats with limited materials including cardboard and duct tape.
The races bring education, experiential learning, and teamwork together, and promotes career opportunities in the skilled trades and technology sectors to local elementary students.
Tracey Bichon is the Pathways Coordinator for the Keewatin Patricia District School Board.
Bichon says “they all had varying degrees of difficulty to them and I don’t think you can predict the outcome until you get in the pool.”
She says “One young student, I know, stayed up all night last night and drafted five plans. When they come here, they present those to the judges.”
Bichon adds the planning, preparation and teamwork needed to succeed in the race is similar to what can be found within work in the trades.
The Skills Ontario program also included a video challenge where students would shoot footage of the races and use their editing skills to make a final feature piece to watch.
