In loving memory of Steve Sipos, aged 86 years, who passed away very peacefully in Thunder Bay on Friday May 3rd, 2019.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary, children Mari-Anne (Ernie) Leuenberger, Joe (Sharon), Kim (Scott) McDonald, Sally, Kelly, Poppy, and daughter-in-law Amber. He is also survived by 13 beloved grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He was recently pre-deceased by his son Stephen.
Steve was born July 13, 1932 in Czechoslovakia and immigrated to Canada in 1937, where his family settled in Kirkland Lake.
Steve was a well-respected teacher and principal, and was passionate about sharing his knowledge and stories with his students. He was an avid outdoorsman who led many wilderness canoe trips. His favourite pastimes were camping with his children, rock hounding, mushroom picking and sharing his extensive survival skills with his family.
Steve was known for his colourful and unusual culinary skills, and was a master at cooking wild animals. He could make a meal out of anything. It was not unusual to see a bear curing in our bathtub.
Steve was also very involved as a volunteer with many different clubs and organizations. From coaching, to selling tickets, to representing communities on council, he was always active when there was a need or a cause.
He was a captivating story teller and anyone who knew Steve would have had the pleasure of being humoured by one or more of his many jokes. His laughter, smile, twinkle in his eyes, and big hugs were always there to greet us.
Steve loved music and will always be remembered by his family for the singing birthday phone calls, Slovakian Christmas carols and Ukrainian music he enjoyed sharing with us all.
The family would like to thank the staff at TCU for their care and kindness, and a special thank you to Dr. Skunta for her professionalism and compassion.
A funeral service will be held at Jenkens Funeral Home in Thunder Bay on Saturday, May 11th at 1:00. If friends desire, donations can be made to the Salvation Army in Steve’s memory.
