The Ford Government will introduce legislation banning cellphones from classrooms in the new school year.
Education Minister Lisa Thompson says through consultation they heard 97% of respondents support some form of a ban on phones.
Once the legislation is passed, starting next school year, smartphones will no longer be allowed in the classroom unless they are required for educational, health or medical purposes.
Thompson notes phones distract from learning, and its hoped students will now focus on reading, writing and math.
