Preliminary work continues in the Ignace area on the potential development of an underground nuclear repository.
Nuclear Waste Management Organization Chief Executive Officer Laurie Swami was in the community this week for a site visit and meetings with local leaders.
Swami says she had the opportunity to sit down with newly elected Mayor Donald Cunningham on how they can work together to move the potential project forward.
She notes they have had some very good discussions on how the community views the project and how they can work together to proceed.
Swami stresses they are still in the exploratory phase and they are looking at how they can learn more about the rock and learn more about community willingness.
She adds there is a lot of work remaining but feels the Ignace area is determined to work with them on a partnership.
Swami says a final site selection decision is expected in 2023.
There are five communities in the running including Hornepayne and Manitouwadge.
