The Chief of the Dryden Police Service says his officers are putting a heavy emphasis on drug and crime prevention programs.
Doug Palson says they have implemented a number of programs, including ‘Project Sunset’, an initiative that shows youth how to socialize and be in a community while having fun.
Palson is hoping this kind of work will lead to long-term benefits.
Police Board Chair Judy Green says she is pleased to see the force be proactive instead of reactive.
Palson is reporting that at least 80% of what they do isn’t dealing with specific crimes.
He says officers deal more with social disorder or social dysfunction.
Palson says that’s why the Service is now focusing on prevention and having their officers highly visible in the community.
Meantime, Palson admits the City is facing a substance abuse problem, but stresses our challenges are no different than anyone else.
When by asked Council this week if Dryden is suffering from a drug problem, Palson was quick to point out that the community is better off than other northern municipalities.
He stresses we live in a safe community.
