Walter “Cob” Yaroshuk
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter “Cob” Yaroshuk at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital on November 14, 2017 at the age of 92.
Cob is survived by his son Brian and daughter-in-law Michele and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by Patricia, his wife of 59 years, his brother Joey Yaroshuk and sister Adele Cosgrove.
Cob was born on November 16, 1924 in Dryden, Ontario.
As a child, Walter was an avid baseball player, gaining his nickname “Cob”.
From 1943-1946 Cob was a Leading Aircraftman in the RCAF, stationed in Vancouver. With a keen interest in aircraft he continued to subscribe to aviation magazines. Due to being colour blind he was never able to obtain his pilot license.
In July of 1946, Cob returned to Dryden from the Airforce to meet his future wife Patricia. Pat and Cob married April 12, 1950 and welcomed their son Brian to their family in 1967.
Cob was an active member of the community as a volunteer firefighter from 1947-1991. He was also a member of the Dryden Flying Club, Curling Club, Power Toboggan Club and the Dryden Boys and Girls Club and a founding member of the ROUGS Club.
Cob was most often found outdoors and as the owner of Cob’s Marine from 1969 -1989 it gave him the opportunity to spend his time trying out the newest Ski-Doo’s.
His spare time was always spent snow-machining, hunting and fishing. In 1962 Cob and Pat built their camp on Route Lake, a place that was enjoyed and shared with many throughout the years. Later in life, Cob could be found doing all the things he loved full-time, spending his days with friends in the bush, hunting and fishing. Weekly traditions became important, watching football at the “stadium”, poker nights, morning coffee stops, and Sunday morning breakfasts.
Cob remained active until days before leaving us, he had an amazing passion for life. To Cob, friends were family, and memories will be cherished by all.
A Funeral service will be held at the Dryden Community Funeral Home located on Highway 17 on Saturday, November 18th, 2017 at 2:00pm with Pastor Velma Henderson officiating.
Refreshments and stories to be shared afterwards.
If friends so desire, donations can be made in Cob’s honor to the Dryden Fire Service, being forwarded to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada, or charity of choice through the Dryden Community Funeral Home, 249 Grand Trunk Ave., Dryden, ON, P8N 2X3.
