Special teams was the difference as the Red Lake Miners failed to capitalize on home ice advantage in a 4-2 setback Wednesday night.
Morgan Venne got the Cochenour Arena rocking early with a five on three goal but Thunder Bay would respond with three power-play goals to take the first period advantage.
Matt Krawiec would pull the Miners close with a second period goal, but Josh Bryant would secure the win with a third period turnover goal.
The North Stars outshot the Miners 46-29.
Thunder Bay leads the Best-of-7 Bill Salonen Cup 2-1.
Game 4 is Thursday night at 7:30 at the Cochenour Arena.
