This week’s Auditor General’s report has some surprising statistics for residents of northwestern Ontario.
The auditor’s report talks extensively about the amount of money the government spends on Ontario residents seeking medical treatment outside the province.
Bonnie Lysyk says overall, Ontario provides more medical services for out-of-province patients than any other province.
However, of the patients having to go to other juridictions for medical treatment, 28 percent are from northwestern Ontario.
She also points out that 95 pecent of those visits to Manitoba hospitals.
The report also points out when we have to travel to Manitoba, the Ministry of health only covers physician and hospital costs, but not other medical care like ambulance service, because it’s not required under the Canada Health Act
