A financial shot in the arm for FedNor.
The Northern Ontario economic development program is receiving an additional $25-million over five years from the federal government.
Kenora MP Bob Nault says the announcement is part of a plan to restructure the program and stresses this is a step in the right direction.
Nault says they now have a better strategy to move the northern economy forward and the main goal is getting better results.
He adds the plan is to develop strong partnerships and support communities, businesses and First Nations.
Nault notes this is just the beginning, noting FedNor Minister Navdeep Bains will be conducting a tour of the region seeking further input.
He says the government has set a framework and it's now up to the north to help them strengthen the economic program.
The restructuring also includes the introduction of the 'Prosperity and Growth Strategy' for Northern Ontario.
Nault says the focus will be on expanding the mining, resource, agriculture and innovation sectors.
He adds the government will also work with small businesses to grow our economy.
