The OPP in the Northwest are celebrating themselves and regular folks.
Top brass were in town Thursday to pay tribute to officers and pedestrians who helped save the lives of others.
Commissioner Vince Hawkes says it’s really touching to hear these stories.
“I get that feeling at the back of my neck with the hair rising because of the extraordinary effort that humans go to to save somebody or try and save somebody’s life.”
Kenora’s Greg Hertz and Lamont Kabestra received the Commissioner’s Citation for Lifesaving for coming to the rescue of an elderly woman who was badly hurt when she fell backwards over a retaining wall.
Staff Sereant Daniel Peters received two awards for rescuing a father and his 12 year old son from the cold rough waters of Lake Superior after their canoe overturned near Portage Bay. After several hours, the worried family of the missing boaters attended Peters’ nearby cottage for assistance in locating the pair.
Provincial Constables Ryan Caul, Cory Markle, David Laviolette and Bradley Slade from Sioux Lookout received the Commissioner’s Citation for Bravery for rescuing an unconcious man from a burning building. (Photo and video by Sheri Leviski-Kotyk)
