A commitment has been made by the Liberal government to fully implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous people.
Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett made the pledge while speaking to a special meeting of the Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa.
Bennett says they are committed to working in partnership with aboriginal peoples to ensure Canadian laws and policies live up to all of the principles of the UN Declaration.
She is also promising a new fiscal relationship that provides significant, predictable and sustainable funding for First Nations communities.
Meantime, the Trudeau Liberals have started the process of splitting the former Federal department of Indian and Northern Affairs.
Bennett says it's part of a government plan to improve the lives of aboriginals.
Bennett notes the move will create exciting new opportunities for Indigenous peoples
