The Rainy River First Nation expects good news today from Native Affairs Minister Michael Bryant.
He and Chief Albert Hunter will make an announcement today concerning progress in talks on the Band’s Land Claim settlement.
At issue is a decades-old claim which consists of about 186 sq km of Crown and Privately-owned land west of Fort Frances.
The claim relates to 6 former reserves, reportedly expropriated by Canada and Ontario in 1914 and 1915.
Families living on the reserves were forced to relocate to the Manitou Rapids reserve.
The final settlement is expected to include compensation and the transfer of more than 18,000 hectares of land in the Rainy River area to reserve status, about 1/3 of which will be Crown land.
