One of the largest unions in our region is pleased with the selection of Thunder Bay MP Patty Hajdu as Federal Labour Minister.
Hajdu replaces Maryam Monsef as part of a major cabinet shuffle.
Local National Unifor representative Stephen Boon says the selection gives the north a voice and a high profile contact.
Boon notes Hajdu has been fairly active in the last year trying to attend labour functions and building a bridge with labour.
He adds Hajdu has a fairly short political track record, but has a progressive background working with women and the poor.
Boon believes she has a strong understanding of labour in northwestern Ontario.
He says the Liberals are a far cry from the "big business-orientated, right-wing Conservative ministers" that they dealt with in the past.
