A five percent raise in legal aid rates is not sitting well with at least one Kenora-based lawyer.
Peter Kirby says the announcement from the Attorney General does not make up for a 15-year freeze in legal aid fees.
Kirby was hoping for at least a 20-percent hike over a three year period.
Lawyers in the Kenora District have refused to take on any new legal aid clients during July and Kirby says options will be reevaluated in the Fall.
He also suggests the legal aid fees are still too low to encourage new lawyers to practise legal aid.
