Provincial Police are stepping up their enforcement on distracted driving this long weekend.
It has been the main cause of highway fatalities in Ontario over the past seven years.
Superintendent Tony Cristilli says it’s not just about drivers talking on their cellphones, but includes texting and even reading while driving.
Last year, 83 people died in crashes related to inattentive drivers.
It’s blamed for 31 highway deaths across Ontario this year.
Cristilli stresses police want to see everyone develop and maintain a complete intolerance to distracted driving and make it socially unacceptable.
Cristilli adds many drivers under-estimate the risk associated with the practice and over-estimate their skills behind the wheel.
Motorists can face fines of up to $1,000 and the loss of three demerit points if convicted.
