A showcase of authentic learning, developing transferable skills and providing opportunities for older students to be positive role models to younger students.
That’s what Sioux North High School teacher Matthew Culham did with his students in an innovative partnership with Kingsway School in Thunder Bay.
Culham says some 45 students in Sioux Lookout were involved in the planning and construction of a timber-framed winterized outdoor classroom, while 15 travelled to Thunder Bay to help erect the structure at Kingsway.
He says he felt great pride in his students for what they were able to accomplish and give back to another school community.
Culham says the day-to-day parts of the project of cutting the timbers is realistic in terms of the real world and what you do on a day-to-day basis in a job or different occupation.
He says it allowed his students to develop skills that they make take down the road to a job in construction or carpentry.
