Its no April Fools joke! The price for hydro goes up starting today.
The McGuinty Government will hike rates from 4.3 cents a kilowatt hour to between 4.7 and 5.5 cents.
NDP Leader Howard Hampton says it will cripple people on low wages and seniors.
Hampton also predicts that small business owners will be forced to close up shop.
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP says the Liberal Government’s energy plan is similar to the previous Conservative Government which he calls disastrous.
Meantime, Hampton is not impressed with the McGuinty Government’s announcement that its opening up Crown land for wind farms and small electricity plants.
Hampton says the Grits are headed down the privatization road.
He calls the statement a non-announcement, saying people are already allowed to log and mine on Crown land.
The move is another indication that the Province plans on phasing out Coal-fired plants such as Atikokan’s.
