A northern Ontario MP has hit the ground running in his bid to become the next leader of the federal NDP.
Charlie Angus says people tell him that Ottawa doesn’t reflect their reality, which is more people working short-term contracts and individuals who are burdened with student debt.
Angus says the Prime Minister is always talking about the “mythical middle class”, but he contends the middle class has been eroded away by policies that favour those who are doing well, while the rest of us are just getting by.
The Timmins-James Bay representative says he wants to put policies forward to re-establish more balance in the economy, making things a bit more fair and reflecting the realities of Canadians today.
He also accuses the Liberals of simply “coasting” on First Nations issues.
Angus says the Trudeau government believes change is going to happen by “sending out happy Tweets and nice hashtags”.
He notes while they are doing that, Indigenous kids in the north are dying everyday from underfunded programs and a lack of mental health services.
MP’s Peter Julian and Guy Caron are also seeking the Federal leadership of the NDP.
