A change of heart for the federal government regarding the future of inland Coast Guard bases.
The Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has now clarified that there is no intent to close bases in Kenora, Gimli and Selkirk.
Kenora MP Bob Nault says there was a review in place, but that didn’t mean the bases were going to close.
He notes talk of closure took off and gained its own life after the Liberals announced a plan to review operations.
Nault says the feds had just announced a $1.5-billion investment for marine safety, so it doesn’t make sense that they would turn around and cut services,
