Tax time has long past, but there are still reports of some people across northwestern Ontario receiving fake phone calls from individuals claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.
The callers make claims of outstanding arrears that need to be paid on the spot.
In some cases, they ask to be paid in gift cards.
Police say the CRA doesn’t make such calls and never asks for payments by prepaid credit cards or gift cards.
The Canada Revenue Agency will also not send details of a tax refund or an interact e-transfer payment.
Before making any payment, the CRA says you should verify the information by contacting them at 1-800-959-8281.
