It may be hard to believe given it’s the middle of October but forest fires are a concern for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
19-new fires sparked this week, a majority caused by trees falling on power lines to the high winds.
Crews were able to extinguish or control the fires, however one is still not under control.
It’s a 120-hectare blaze burning in the northwest corner of Wabakimi Park in the Sioux Lookout district.
The fire is now being observed.
Meantime, fire crews ignited a Wind Lake prescribed burn in the Sioux Lookout area a week ago today, with the aim of restoring and maintaining the health, integrity and sustainability of the forest ecosystem for pine and spruce regeneration.
The goal is to improve the moose and woodland caribou habitat.
The burn is also aimed at reducing the forest fire hazard from damaged forests as a result of a tornado in 2009.
