The Dryden Eagles walked away with three wins yesterday in their home opener against the Fort Frances Muskies.
It was a thriller in Senior Girls Basketball as the Eagles outlasted the Muskies 26-25.
Monica Tourond scored the game winner on a free throw with four seconds left to play.
The basket came after the Muskies had a chance to win the game, however they committed an offensive foul in penalty to force the free throw’s.
Tourond says she was trying not to think about the basket and focus on the shot.
She notes she managed to avoid eye contact with teammate Marcie Coles who was cheering her on.
Tourond says they just learned a new defence five minutes before the game and was impressed with their effort.
She believes the team is just starting to come together.
Tourond finished with six points.
Ally Wisneski led Dryden with nine points.
The Juniors lost a hard fought battle 49-35 and Cali Lappage led the Eagles with 10-points.
Lappage says they refused to give up and managed to work together.
She notes they had to make several adjustments during the game to combat a tall and athletic Muskies team.
In Boys Volleyball, both Dryden teams cruised to straight sets victories over the Muskies.
The Seniors were led by Jared Vandenbrand in a 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 win.
Vandenbrand says his team was able to land their serves and was boosted by strong passing.
He notes they managed to grab some early momentum and that helped in the win.
Vandenbrand says they still need to work on defence and positioning.
The Dryden Eagles Junior Boys downed Fort Frances 25-11, 25-12, 25-13.
Evan Waller says his club played hard and the ball bounced their way.
Waller notes they stuck to their game plan and did well in scrambling.
The Eagles are back on home court Thursday against the Beaver Brae Broncos.
